Queen VictoriaQueen Victoria was born on May 24, 1819. She was the granddaughter of George III, and her father was Edward, fourth in line to the throne. A man named Edward married Princess Victoria from Germany and they only had just one child. As a young girl Victoria’s father died, and 6 days later George III died. She was an enthusiastic supporter of the British Empire, and also supported British involvement in the Boer War. In 1877, she became Empress of India.

David Livingstone was born on March 19, 1813 and died May 1, 1873. In the role of a “medical missionary,” he set forth to Africa. Arriving in Cape Town, South Africa in March, 1841. A few years after landing, he married Mary Moffat and had several children. He eventually made his way north and set out to trek across the Kalahari Desert. By 1856, he had gone across the continent from west to east, arriving at the coastal region of Quelimane in present-day Mozambique.

TelegraphThe non electric telegraph was invented by Claude Chappe in 1794. But in 1809 a crude telegraph was invented by Samuel Soemmering. He used 35 wires and gold electrodes in water. His message was received 2000 feet away at another station. In 1828, the first telegraph was invented in the United States by Harrison Dyar. He has sent electrical sparks through chemically treated paper tape to burn dots and dashes.
