Railway Artillery
Railway Artillery first appeared during the American Civil War. These Rail-Mounted guns were used primarily for offensive purposes. A pivot mount affixed directly to the rail car allowed the gun to traverse and fire in any direction relative to the line of the track. As with the French, the initial British railway guns of World War 1 were retrofitted naval and coastal guns. After creating railway artillery during the Civil War, the U.S. Army forgot about it, only to rediscover it in 1917. The United States followed the European lead to converting coastal guns into railway guns.
